TY - JOUR AB - © 2002-2011 IEEE. In this paper, a transient lumped parameter thermal solution combined with finite volume mode is presented. The conical rotor motor is widely used in industrial applications because of its self-locking ability, e.g., in hoisting equipment. It is also very important to investigate its thermal characteristics at design step in order to ensure safe operation. However, because of intermitted load, numerical solution is no longer suitable for the requirement of fast computation. Lumped parameter thermal network is chosen in this paper as it can provide fast and acceptable results. Due to nonuniform air gap, the computational fluid dynamics is adopted to simulate the air flow conditions in order to achieve accurate heat transfer coefficients. Afterward, the thermal capacities are applied to calculate the transient temperature rise. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by the 3-D finite-element method and the temperature test, and good agreements are achieved.
