TY - JOUR AB - The Bloch mode scattering matrix method for modeling extended photonic crystal (PC) structures was investigated. The method was also used for calculating the properties of extended PC devices when the device consists of a small number of distinct PC structures or for a long propagation lengths through uniform PC waveguides. The interface between each pair of waveguides was characterized by a set of generalized Fresnel scattering matrices which describes the reflection and transmission of the Bloch modes. It was found that the physical insight provided by the method was used to derive simple and semianalytic models that allows fast and efficient calculations of complex PC structures.
