Abstract: T he history of ethnicized and linguistic groups in fonner Austl;an South-Tyrol, the struggle of the German- and Ladin-' speaking communities under Fascism, the fight for political autonomy from the end of World War II until the ratification, in 1972, of the so called "pacchetto" ("package") of laws that define the terms of this autonomy and protect minorities, or the official end of negotiations between AustI;a and Italy in 1992' are not the object of this chapter, but constitute its broad C"Ontext. A few preliminmy words on how the so called "conv;ven=n" ("living together") is organized, produced, and reproduced through an administrative and political system are thus necessary, in order to introduce our our topiC.</description>
