pubs.rights-statement	Legacy is a novel that looks at the impact of the 1970s civil rights movement on the Aboriginal community today. Research background This research sits in the field of political science and creative writing. Orwell’s Burmese Days uses the novel format to demonstrate that colonized peoples can become corrupted through the processes of colonization. Goodall’s From Invasion to Embassy put the evolution of Indigenous politics in NSW on the research agenda. Curthoys’ Freedom Ride demonstrates that creative writing can represent aspects of history that are not possible in traditional academic research. This novel addresses the research question: what aspects of the 1970s civil right movement can be represented in creative forms that could not be represented in traditional history? Research contribution The project demonstrated that using fiction to explore historical and political questions allows the researcher to make arguments that would be insensitive and damaging if they were discussed in relation to real named and living individuals. In particular the novel argues that the very same characteristics that made 1970s civil rights leaders such charismatic politicians could be intensely damaging in their private lives. Research significance This novel was published by University of Queensland Press. It won the 2009 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award.	en_US
