pubs.rights-statement	The Field was a site specific reactive video installation that explored how techniques of site specificity taken from the audio arts language of field recording could be utilised in video art. Research Background This research sits in the field of visual fine arts. John Cage demonstrated that it was possibly to consider any natural sound as music if you developed the skill to listen to it in that way. Bill Viola argued and showed that it was possible to consider the camera as a microphone. Douglas Kahn points out that sound recording by definition does not participate in the subjective, psychological filtering of our ears. The research question addressed by this project is: if a video work applied the language of field recording as “found composition” to the visual how would it change the meaning and reception of the moving image? Research Contribution The Field shows that by presenting visual material from directly outside the gallery inside the space in the frame of mediated video art it can bring elements of the language of the field recording genre into the visual domain. Highlighting the awareness that a field recording whether it is visual or aural is never neutral objective documentation. Research Significance The Field was produced and presented as part of the Memory Flows exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park and funded by a grant from the Australia Council. Real Time magazine described the exhibition as “a stylish and conceptual exploration of the thematic with strong site-specific resonances”.	en_US
