The frequency shift of sources embedded in a two-dimensional photonic cluster composed of circular cylinders is considered and the effects of cluster shape and orientation are investigated. It is found that by carefully tailoring the shape of the cluster the frequency shift can be greatly enhanced even for relatively small clusters-behaviour that can be understood in terms of the poles of the scattering matrix. It is also found that the frequency shift is a strong function of the orientation of the photonic cluster. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
