Schooling takes up large amounts of time and energy for young people. As Australia is seen to become a knowledge society , education and official certification are increasingly important for all young people, but especially for those who may not have access to other tickets to success, such as social networks. At the same time, however, school doesn t always work very well for those students. Drawing on Australian research, this paper first explores various ways in which school can be problematic or even alienating for students, using both interviews with students and observations of school life. While many young people put up with school, even when it is not ideal for them, some end up leaving school. The second part of the paper considers these early school leavers. Statistically, early leavers are much more likely to end up unemployed or not in the labour market. In contrast, the paper uses Australian research to demonstrate some more positive possible pathways for these young people, through employment or education.
