Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterised by chronic, excessive, and uncontrollable worry. Despite evidence-based treatment for GAD being available, uptake is generally low, and there are many barriers to accessing treatment. The aim of this program of research was to enhance treatment uptake and reduce barriers by examining the acceptability and efficacy of remote treatment approaches for GAD. The program of research consisted of four studies. Study 1 provides a synthesis of the current research on remote treatments for GAD using a meta-analytic approach. Study 2 examined the treatment histories, barriers, and preferences in a sample of individuals with clinically significant GAD symptoms. Study 3 investigated the acceptability and efficacy of a 10-session internet-videoconferencing delivered CBT (VCBT) intervention for GAD using a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Study 4 examined the feasibility of a brief 5-session VCBT intervention using an open trial design. Taken together, the results of this program of research provide preliminary research to support the dissemination of high-intensity remote CBT interventions for individuals with GAD. These interventions are likely to reduce the barriers to accessing treatment reported by individuals with GAD and thus may make evidence-based treatments more accessible for patients.
