dc.description.abstract At a certain point in the late 20lh century the word "aesthetics" withdrew from active service in the theoretical vocabulary of art. It had become both too universal and too particular. Too universal in that everything had become aesthetic, sport, management, theology, and so nothing was more aesthetic than anything else, not even art. Too particular in that aesthetics was unable to confront the present situation of avant-garde art as it unfolded during modernism and postmodernism. Hence aesthetics was replaced by new disciplines for thinking about art: critical theory, art theory, cultural theory, the philosophy of art and so on. The struggle to find the proper name and form for thinking about art goes on.
