The soundtrack for Rowan Woods The boys (Australia 1997), by Sydney minimalist jazz group the Necks, provides a distinctive example of an Australian film score which contributes `cinesonic substance to the films exploration of masculine violence. This article explores both the improvisational modalities of the Necks music, and the bands role in creating music for Woods film. Devised according to a `juxtapositional aesthetic responding to the films locations, characters and situations, the Necks music for The boys matches the elliptic aesthetic of the film while also functioning in its own right as `cinesonic music.
