Opioids have demonstrated benefit without documented respiratory toxicity. Several psychotropic agents and nebulized furosemide have sufficient promise to warrant rigorous prospective studies. Ultimately, reducing the frightening sensation of breathlessness is something that can be achieved predictably with medications currently available.
