pubs.rights-statement	Research background This research is in the area of creative writing. Thea Astley links the act of reading with the development of personal agency. Luke Davies has shown how childhood reading practices can inform the development of a writing position. Brenda Walker has argued that reading can have a valuable distancing effect during a period of personal crisis. Building on this work that explores the various ways in which reading can be important, this story presents a thought-experiment asking: what would happen if the role of reading were elevated in the national agenda to the point that, as with a Ministry of Finance, there would be a ministry devoted to the promotion of reading? Research contribution Exploring this hypothetical reveals that trying to imagine reading being regarded at this level of importance necessarily becomes a comic endeavour. This suggests the lack of attention to reading in Western political culture. Research significance The piece was commissioned by the editor, Matthew Lamb, and accepted for publication in Review of Australian Fiction; a contribution fee was paid. The RAF features fortnightly stories from leading authors. Other contributors include David Foster, Susan Johnston, Georgia Blain and Christos Tsiolkas. Established authors are paired with emerging authors to promote new writing; my emerging author was Eleanor Limprecht, who is also my Doctoral student.	en_US
