Inexperience and Other Stories is a fiction collection, while “394 Abercrombie Street” and “The Medication Trial” are work of creative non-fiction drawing on personal experience. Research contribution: each of the works experiments with different ways to represent experience. Inexperience and Other Stories shows that literary techniques that slow down time can serve traditional storytelling by retaining a focus on drama, interesting characters and intriguing narrative questions. ‘394 Abercrombie Street’ demonstrates that the tension between the storytelling of memoir and digressions into essayistic mode can be reconciled by ensuring the two modes are balanced as a counterpoint; by ensuring that each mode is addressing the same themes; and by developing a coherent authorial voice which both tells the memoir story and presents the arguments and ideas in the essayistic sections. ‘The Medication Trial’ shows that it is possible to retain scientific precision in storytelling about medical experiences by structuring the drama around medical details. Research significance: Inexperience and Other Stories was listed as a Book of the Year by Australian Book Review. Individual stories have won The Penguin Short Story Prize and been published in leading journals such as Antipodes (USA) and Southerly.
