Arising from the field of architecture, this work engages site-specific intervention to create interactive relationships between our senses and our built environment. The research aims to re-engage and re-orient perceptions of place. Street Light Disco takes the Sydney street banner, which is typically used as a marketing device, and reinvents it as a dynamic and interactive surface. The unique material properties produce a mirror-ball-effect, reflecting the site's historic architecture while creating noticeable light patterns and distortions. Amplified by surrounding conditions, these formations work to variously transform the experience of the plaza. Urban Chandelier consists of 999 individually CNC trimmed carbon fibre rods hung above a passageway upon which 6,000 reflective triangles are placed. Suspended by a cable system, Urban Chandelier reflects the natural day light and artificial night light creating dynamic light patterns which give expression to natural invisible forces, revitalising a forgotten public space in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. Located in Sydney's Martin Place, Street Light Disco was commissioned by the City of Sydney for Art and About (2014). Urban Chandelier was one of five projects selected through an international competition by the American Institute of Architects and the River City Company to be constructed as part of Passageways (2016), an initiative aimed at activating unused spaces in Chattanooga. |
