The Indo Pacific Region is a research project on Australia's newly defined geo-political region of interest. This research sits in the fields of territorial architecture, urbanism and landscape urbanism. The 2013 Australian Defence White Paper Indo-Pacific Strategic Arc formally shifted the country from the Pacific to the Indo-Pacific Region. The new region had been theorized in diplomatic circles since the 1950s, yet it was the 2000s' increase of maritime trade and the emergence of the BRICS that pushed Australia to be the first country to recognize it. The aim of this project is to construct the missing narratives of the Indo Pacifc region through and with architecture. The establishment of a new global region is a rare event. It radically reconfigures the shape, limits and relationships of a section of the world. It is the definitive design project yet designers are rarely involved. Our hypothesis is that the case of the Indo Pacific region is different. It covers an exceptional extension of fragmented territory in which architecture's ubiquity makes an ideal lingua franca. Its ability to intersect with social, political, economic, technologic, eco-systemic, and spatial controversies makes architecture the ultimate vehicle to navigate and connect commonalities between local idiosyncrasies. The installation The Indo Pacific Atlas was one of two Australian projects invited to the first Chicago Architecture Biennial The State of Art of Architecture, curated by Joseph Grima and Sarah Herda. The installation The Portable Indo Pacific was exhibited at the 2016 Istanbul Design Biennale Are we human? curated by Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley. |
