This essay explores some aspects of the idea of whiteness as they have emerged, within the Australian context, from the international debate on race of the end of 19tb century and up to the 1930s. It will focus on the Australian inheritance and re-articulation of the oldest and most deep-rooted prejudices against blacks and not-white races.
