© 2019 The Royal Society of Chemistry. A new visible light responsive photocatalyst Sn(ii)-doped SrNb2O6 has been developed for water reduction and water oxidation reactions. First-principles calculations revealed that the Sn(ii) dopant created a new occupied state in the band gap which resulted in photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation.
