A microwave applicator using a rectangular waveguide with two symmetrically placed double L septa is proposed for processing dielectric sheet materials. The attenuation caused by the loaded lossy dielectric sheet is obtain by the Ritz‐Galerkin method combined with perturbation theory. The results show that a microwave applicator using the proposed structure can process dielectric sheets with a higher loss factor and/or larger physical dimensions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
