This essay explores, mainly through an analysis of the three explicitly nationalistic short stories written by Rao, the political and philosophical preoccupations which inspired the author to depict Gandhi's national movement as a significant expression of the complex Indian consciousness. In examining his artistic vision of Indian nationalism, this study also shows Rao on his intellectual and spiritual journey from the rustic portrayal of Indian village life to the more spiritual and mythical depiction of Gandhi's national 'liberation' of India.
