This seminar is Part 3 of Seminar 7 of the 2007 Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Lecture Series. The role of civil societies in global governance. Global governance is defined here as “the multi-layered system of rules, practices, procedures, customs, values and activities through which influence is exercised and resources are deployed to achieve objectives beyond a single state or region”. Up until the 20th century the civil society took a domestic role of influencing individual governments in order to change foreign and domestic policy. There was no activism at the international level. The 20th century brought globalisation and the technology revolution and with it came an international civil society that engages in global governance and has a powerful international role to play.
