This paper describes tertiary students’ views and opinions of collaborative group work during their semester-long experience of working on carefully designed tasks during weekly tutorial sessions of one-hour duration. This paper will present primary findings of students’ opinions about group work and assessment of group work in mathematics. Data will be presented from in-depth interviews conducted with volunteers. This study is part of a larger qualitative project investigating the effects of group work on students’ motivational and achievement levels in a large first-year undergraduate mathematics subject in both face-to-face and computer supported environments.
