pubs.rights-statement	This is a portfolio of newspaper opinion pieces on gendered violence in Australia and internationally. 1. Research background This research is in the field of journalism studies and gender studies. Stein, writing on the public performance of gendered violence for 40 years, argues that dismissal of violence against women and girls functions as a training ground for ignoring the more ‘private’ iteration of violence – domestic or partner violence - and that increased recognition of early signs even at school may lead to a decrease in instances of violence against women. Moorti and Cuklanz argue that coverage of instances of violence against women emphasise the ‘feminine’ or ‘victim’ aspects of those who experience gender based partner violence. The research question is: how can mainstream journalism reject those models of femaleness when representing those women who experience intimate partner violence ? 2. Research contribution These pieces demonstrated that the opinion column format is the best suited of traditional journalism genres to veer away from representing women in the ‘victim’ mode – as they do not have to represent news values. Opinion columns allow for a synthesis of original interviews, original research and data but also are able to reject stereotypes outlined by Summers. 3. Impact All pieces were published the Canberra Times (print and online) and on the websites of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age. The combined readership of these columns reached was over eighty thousand. The social media reach includes over four thousand facebook shares.	en_US
