pubs.rights-statement	This research is a portfolio of journalism about the online feminist action group Destroy the Joint. Research background This research sits in the field of journalism studies and digital activism. Castells identified the emergence of mass self-communication in a networked society. Bennett has argued that connective action is an important form of contemporary social activism– encouraging social change through the use of personalised action frames. Tilly enumerated the key concepts of worthiness, unity, numbers and commitment in creating social change. The research question is: what are the most important elements of advocacy journalism in a digital activist context? Research contribution These journalistic pieces demonstrate that the most important elements of advocacy journalism for digital activism are: • Wide networks – it is important to overcome the danger of solipsism in social media and reach diverse audiences. • Consistent message – there are many feminisms. Advocacy journalism must focus on unifying issues including opposition to violence, equal pay and fighting gendered poverty. • Authenticity – when journalistic writing is clearly aligned with personal beliefs the resulting work is more powerful and persuasive. Research significance This portfolio of journalism was published in publications including smh.com.au, theage.com.au, canberratimes.com.au, theconverastion.edu.au and the Walkley Magazine. The phrase “destroy/ing the joint”, which I appropriated in this work, has become a widely cited meme for social activism, and led to the publication of the book Destroying the Joint (ed.Caro 2013).	en_US
