pubs.rights-statement	A partnership with Ku-ring-gai Council from 2009-2011 explored options for park structures other than the standard off-the-shelf models commonly found in suburban parks. The partnership initiated research to advance industry understanding of the possibilities of innovative materials and state-of-the-art computer numerically controlled (CNC) design and fabrication processes in architecture. It employed prototyping as the primary methodology. Prototyping involves building physical models from representative materials in 3-dimensions, often at full-scale, to explore design alternatives and confirm performance prior to proceeding to the actual construction of a structure. Numerous prototypes exploring different CNC processes and innovative materials were built at half- and full-scale before the final design for the concrete roofed structure was developed. Proposals for which prototypes were CNC fabricated but not ultimately constructed in the park included a shell of folded ‘Alucobond’ composite panels on a high-tech timber structure, and vacuum formed plastic panels for the roof canopy (similar to the bumper bars on buses). The prototyping involved collaborations with two Sydney fabricators and a structural engineer: Make Good Pty Ltd, a fabricator with a 5-axis CNC milling machine suitable for architectural applications; Warringah Plastics, a fabricator with 5-axis CNC milling and vacuum forming equipment; and Partridge, structural engineers. The research also involved students from the UTS Master and Bachelor of Architecture degrees and was recognised by UTS in 2011, with a Learning and Teaching Citation awarded to Orr for her commitment to community engagement and integration of prototyping activities to improve student learning in architectural design and construction.	en_US
