NO FULL TEXT AVAILABLE. This thesis contains 3rd party copyright material. ----- My thesis is a novel entitled “Safety”, concerning the life of my protagonist, Elizabeth. “Safety” is set in contemporary Sydney and Spain. It is about sex: how one person finds her way in a long relationship, after having had difficulties with sex and intimacy; difficulties that include being raped as a teenager. It is also about violence, and how we process it and live with it; about children, and how a relationship survives them; and about mortality. None of us is safe, or can hope to be: “Safety” is about living with this knowledge. Appended to this novel is an exegesis entitled “Solving Problems in Fiction”, in which I discuss issues relating to the writing of my novel, and in particular examine the methods by which contemporary writers identify and rectify problems in their fiction.
