This paper is concerned with a new type of combustion system for a direct injection (DI) diesel engine, using spray impingement close to the slanting wall. The macrospray characteristics of the fuel jet impinging close to the slanting wall are investigated with the advanced particle image velocimetry (PIV) measuring technique in a constant-volume vessel. A single-cylinder DI diesel engine with the new combustion system is tested using different schemes. The experimental results obtained show that the new combustion system can improve the performance under medium and low engine loads. Even better performance will be obtained through further improvement.
