Karl Ove Knausgaard showed how novelistic techniques such as the narrative arc can be applied to memoir. J.M. Coetzee demonstrated that memoir can be used to show the human subject at the centre of the personal, social and cultural forces that shape its identity. Jean-Paul Sartre established how self-interrogation through memoir creates a double movement of recollection and self-reconstruction. The research question of this project is: how can literary writing overcome the tension between memoir and the essayistic mode? Research contribution This work demonstrates that the tension between the storytelling of memoir and digressions into essayistic mode can be reconciled by ensuring the two modes are balanced as a counterpoint; by ensuring that each mode is addressing the same themes; and by developing a coherent authorial voice which both tells the memoir story and presents the arguments and ideas in the essayistic sections. This is achieved by maintaining a reciprocal relationship between the two modes, whereby the conceptual material is inflected with story elements that support the essayistic mode, and the story elements contain the lateral movement of reflection without undermining the story’s forward movement. Research significance The work was commissioned and published by Sydney Review of Books as part of its Writing NSW Project, funded by the government agency Arts NSW.
