Dynamics of a Powertrain with Ratio-Dependent System Parameters and Multiple Nonlinearities

This paper presents the study on the dynamics of vehicle powertrains performed recently by the research group in Faculty of Engineering, the Uuiversity of Technology, Sydney. The torsional finite elements developed for direct, branched and grounded conuections with rigid or elastic tooth mesh and clearances are briefly introduced. The assembly of a dynamic model of global powertrain with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a real car configuration is then illustrated for free and forced torsional vibration analysis over a wide range of operating conditions. Results of the vibration modes and transient behaviours of the powertrain under various load conditions such as gear shifting, stickslip and gear lash are presented. A novel facility capable of simulating a real car running on road for testing the transmission performance and measuring the transient responses of a powertrain is reported. The preliminary experimental results obtained from the tests carried out on the facility are presented. Discussions are also given on the future work on the characterisation of the dynamics of powertrain with coupled multiple nonlinearities.
