The article presents a reflection on the expansion of the French language, and more generally on the notion of francophonie, in Asia. Topics include the particular history and situation of French in the countries of Asia, the evolution of an interest in the French culture in Asian countries and where it comes from, despite the fact that these countries were never colonized by the French, and an overview of the literature dedicated to this subject throughout the 20th century. The evolving way that French is perceived throughout the world is examined.
