Fandom studies in popular music have expanded significantly over the past few decades, with the image of the crazed, hysterical and irrational music fan largely overtaken by studies focused on fan communities of ‘ordinary’ people who gain pleasure through their fandom. But is it enough to just characterize fans in terms of ‘music for pleasure’, anymore? In an effort to expand this progression of popular music fan studies, this paper will address music fandom that does not express approval, but can involve an active dislike, of particular music, the position of antifandom.
