pubs.rights-statement	How many ways to say you? is an experimental video foregrounding aesthetic experience within a poetic approach to documentary. Research Background This research sits in the field of Film, Television and Digital Media. Yu Jian refers to lineation as a way to order the raw materials of life to make art. François Girard mirrored the form of the Goldberg Variations to structure micronarrative fragments into a feature film. Umberto Eco developed an idea of the etcetera of the list whereby the included elements refer outwards to other possible inclusions. The research question addressed by this project is: what happens when formal choices are foregrounded in a poetic approach to documentary as the primary means to explore conceptual material? Research Contribution The project adapted poetic lineation for video documentary to bridge the openness of observational material and the rhetorical intentions of visual essay. The project applied a list-like structure based on the multiple ways to say ‘you’ in Khmer. This structure provided a cohesive logic while opening up the potential for connections to be made across a series of ‘you’ inspired micronarratives. Research Significance How many ways to say you? screened as part of the Sightlines conference and went through a process of peer review to be included in the online journal, Sightlines: Filmmaking in the academy. The work was described by the peer reviewers as “an engaging, image-driven work” that found “an innovative way to force reflection upon the social construction of the country, and histories of conflict and colonialism”.	en_US
