pubs.rights-statement	Every Time I Leave the Room was an installation prototype for gesture, navigation, immersion and multimodality that explored news methods of navigation in relationship to offscreen space and narrative. Research Background The research is in the field of Visual Arts and Crafts. The work was navigated using gestural controls and shadow play, allowing users to navigate linked multi-angled micro-narratives and spatialities, running temporally parallel. Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen have both theorised on the potentials of visual elements like framing and vectors to connect and disconnect in the still image, whilst Dennis Del Favero has demonstrated the reformulation of narrative within digital cinema, albeit within the virtual environment. Is it possible to develop this research using a more cinematic approach to gesture and interaction? Research Contribution The work discovered that the out-of-frame creates a unique sense of meaning in both linear and non-linear media works. It explored the expressive and narrative possibilities of off-screen space to create meaning through a multi-modal approach: through still image, text, moving image, sound, interaction and the database, over timelines that are interactive, linear and concurrent. Research Significance The project was produced using funding from the Dean’s Discretionary fund, with matching funds from the Mosman Art Gallery. The work has been exhibited at the Mosman Art Gallery, Sydney and The Asterix Gallery, San Fransisco. The art critic Andrew Frost described the work as a ‘… fascinating experience’ and as a ‘masterclass in interactive new media art’.	en_US
