WINNER of the Australian IDEA Design Awards Category: Concept - Project : Nimby IDEA, the (inside) Design Excellence Awards, is Australia's most prestigious interdisciplinary awards, celebrating design that changes the way we think, live and interact. The idea for the NIMBY project stemmed from the paradoxical use of the typical frontyard of terrace houses predominantly seen in Sydney. In contrast to the backyard which has become an important social space, the frontyard is either reserved as a token representation of the house or a disposal area, often displaying a diverse collection of old couches and chairs, garden tools, tired letterboxes and garbage bins. The NIMBY designs aim at expanding the traditional concept of the fence while creating a dynamic environment that addresses multiple objectives: - to create an exchange between the private house and the street; - to reappropriate a neglected space whilst adding quality; - to integrate into the global design, different possible functions: a place where one can sit or lie down, invisible storage areas for garbage bins; - to develop an identity for the house.
