pubs.rights-statement	“Once Upon a Time in” is a series of social documentaries for television exploring the relationship between social disorder, the state, and immigrant settlement in Australia. Research background: The project is in the fields of Sociology (1606) and Political Science (1608). Shah (2012) explores how governments pursue policies in areas of immigrant settlement “in order to build community, cultivate public virtue and maintain social order”. Holton (1997) points to the tension between dominant conceptions of national identity and the anthropological realities of immigrant settlement, adjustment and survival. Merton’s (1938) study of anomie and social structure explored the nexus between opportunity and expectation. The research question for this project is: In what ways do ethnic communities engage with wider strategies of social cohesion and societal integration? Research contribution: These documentaries start from a contestable proposition - for migrant (especially refugee) communities, in the beginning all is chaos and the first things to be organised are crime and religion. This project focuses on understanding how crime develops and communities create resilience to constrain its impact. The key elements are: a. initial chaos, disorganisation, and fractured social capacity b. rise of crime as an alternative narrative to integration c. emergence of communal counter-narratives and strengths as understanding of the wider society’s resources grows. Research significance: Funded by SBS and Screen Australia, the programs were seen by over 1,300,000 viewers in Australia. Received UN Gold Award, shortlisted for Walkley as an “excellent example of the power and versatility of this longer form of journalism”.	en_US
