“A Chance Encounter” is a site-specific animation work commissioned by the Australian National Maritime Museum Sydney to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of Dirk Hartog landing in western Australia. This major public commission was funded by a grant from the Netherlands Embassy. The animation was projection mapped onto the rooftop surfaces of the Museum, and exhibited nightly from October 17th to November 9th 2016. The work is disseminated via the ANMM website as an online essay by curator Kim Tao, and maintains a permanent web presence on their Youtube channel. Animated documentary is an emerging and hotly contested area of practice. Films such as Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi have shown that complex historical events can be viewed through the poetic lens of animation, and given a unique, singular perspective. Animation was once seen as an inappropriate medium for documentary but DOK Leipzig Director 2015 Leena Pasanen recognizes a shift in positioning- “It took a while for filmmakers to prove…that animation could bring something significant to a film. ‘Waltz with Bashir’ by Ari Folman was the first one that proved us wrong.” “A Chance Encounter” builds on research around animated documentary and marks a further exploration of projection mapping within my practice, building on work made for Customs House in 2015. The hand drawn animation extends the exploratory analogue and digital approach underpinning my research. Focusing on creating modular sequences of hand drawn animation, to facilitate new combinations in digital space, this approach references the emerging culture of “Remixability and Modularity” as discussed by Lev Manovich, as he imagines- “a cultural ecology where all kinds of cultural objects regardless of the medium or material are made from Lego-like building blocks." |

A Chance Encounter is situated within the genre of animated documentary, an emerging area of practice. Animated documentaries such as Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi have shown that complex historical events can be viewed through the poetic lens of animation, and given a unique, singular perspective. The work builds upon this emergent field, using the constructed aesthetic to explore ideas around documentary as a form of interpretation, rather than simply a presentation of material fact. The particularly sparse records of Hartog's voyage - there are no surviving portraits of him, no pictures of his ship, and no journal was kept of the voyage from the Netherlands to Australia ¬- further necessitated a poetic imagining of his journey. The content is made from a series of related but separately made hand drawn animation sequences, which are then combined together in digital space in unexpected ways.
