pubs.rights-statement	The Alchemists: Rediscovering Photography in the Age of the jpeg focuses on experimental darkroom processes while reflecting upon the current resurgence of analogue practices within the contemporary digital era. This curatorial project presents 25 photographic practices to investigate a 'return' to analogue at a time when digital images are rapidly created and consumed. All of these practices utilise antiquated, outmoded and analogue modes of image making. While many exhibitions have been held internationally there has been little focus on the Asia-Pacific region. The Alchemists project sought to remedy this, by focusing on an Australian perspective with respect to the broader Asia-Pacific context. Born of darkroom experimentation and mixed with innovative digital photography techniques, the project invokes new hybrid practices and dialogues between analogue and digital photography. Rather than fetishizing the analogue - the subject of many exhibitions - this exhibition opens up new ground through a focused investigation of the ways in which digital and analogue processes can coexist. The exhibition brings together new and recent works from early-practice and established artists to examine the return to and rediscovery of wet processes, analogue photographic techniques, and hybrid forms that collapse historical divisions and lay the ground for future innovations. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Photography over a two year period and presented in 2015, along with associated events.	en_US
