The 11 photographs in Camouflage arise from the field of photographic portraiture and self-portraiture. Central to the picturing of identity in portraiture is the presentation of the human face. Traditionally, when a photographer turns the camera to their subject they do so to have them 'appear'. In contrast, this research focuses on the paradoxical act of hiding from the camera. An important historical precedent is the use of masquerade in the work of Claude Cahun. Contemporary photographer, Cindy Sherman is also well known in this field, furthering investigations through her representations of multiple personas. This body of work offers an alternative mode of self-representation in comparison to masquerade. Rather than adopting subterfuge like Cahun and Sherman I have instead aimed to deny the face entirely shifting the focus from masquerade to camouflage through the precise act of hiding. Camouflaged behind screens, the identity of the subject is concealed, however a portrait is offered through the discrete disclosure of the body in combination with the anthropomorphic forms of the 'hides'. Camouflage was exhibited in solo exhibitions at Queensland Centre for Photography Brisbane, Sutton Gallery Melbourne and Artereal Sydney; curated group shows include Photo LA, Los Angeles; Crossing paths with Vivian Maier at Centre for Contemporary Photography, and Colour on the Concrete, UTS Gallery. Camouflage was acquired by the National Gallery of Australia and UTS ART; and was awarded Honourable Mention by judges Judy Annear (AGNSW) and Shaun Lakin (NGA) in the 2013 Bowness Photography Prize, Monash Gallery of Art. |
