pubs.rights-statement	This portfolio focuses on ethical questions concerning permission and the disclosure of the 'private' in public space. The work arises from the fields of photography and expanded visual communication. The Sleepers emerges from the genre of street photography, specifically changing perceptions around ‘permission’ to take candid photographs in public space. Traditionally, public space was recorded by photographers who often sought to capture anonymous subjects without their awareness or permission. This lack of awareness was believed to create a more authentic picture of a person, in that the un-posed subject signified something of the private. However, ethical questions arise when photographing people anonymously and without their permission. Everyday Fear sought an alternative form of private disclosure that departs from figural representation. Instead of seeking the 'private' inner world of a stranger, text-based confessions were gained from subjects who were knowingly revealing the 'private in public'. The Sleepers was exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (2011). It has been published, critically written about and exhibited extensively. (e.g. Marsh, A. Miles, M. & Palmer, D. (eds) 2015, The Culture of Photography in Public Space, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago.) Everyday Fear was developed as part of the Artist Residency Program, City of Sydney and exhibited by The Substation, Melbourne as part of the Transit (billboards) Gallery (2013). Four works from the series were acquired by Artbank, an Australian Federal Government initiative.	en_US
