This digest presents the analysis of a radial flux, dual-rotor-outputs, permanent magnet brushless DC motor for variable-speed air conditioners (Fig. 1). Two motors of appropriate ratings are usually used to separately drive the condenser and evaporator. This results in an increase in cost and space. Alternatively, a motor with outputs on both sides of a common shaft may also be employed. However, the required power ratings and the speed ratios for the two outputs are different, which cannot be easily achieved with such a configuration.
