© 2017 IEEE. The paper investigates the problems of excitation of Characteristic modes on a complex platform and the realization of desired radiation patterns using the Characteristic mode analysis (CMA) and related techniques. The excitation issue is examined theoretically and an analytical approach to deriving the excitation fields needed to obtain a specified CM is presented. The problem of placing user-specified antennas on a complex platform to realize a desired pattern is also discussed.
