© 1980-2012 IEEE. An efficient electromagnetic model for the scattering analysis of targets placed in large natural environments is presented. A hybrid formulation combining volume and surface integral equations is used to describe forest environment (dielectric objects) in which metallic structures are present. A large part of the forest can be analyzed electromagnetically by using the characteristic basis function method, whose use enables us to simulate the problem at hand and significantly reduce the dimension of the linear system that needs to be solved.
