Coetzee’s novels Boyhood (1998) and Youth (2003) explore themes of race and migration using fictionalised autobiography (Schrieber 2015). P. Nazou documents the experiences of Greek women in her oral history Promised Brides (2013) to explore the culture of Greek migrants who came to Australia in the 1950s. L. Dallenbach (1989) and F. Bacon (1985) show how self-reflexivity and sensation can be used to challenge systems of representation. The Health Inspectors draws on these approaches to ask how we understand race issues and the roles of migrant women at the tail end of the White Australia Policy. Research contribution The Health Inspectors combines story-telling elements (plot, forward movement), the self-reflexive techniques of the mise en abyme and scene-rendering that foregrounds sensation, to create a unique tableau effect that emphases both synchronic and diachronic axes of narrative. The juxtaposition of the escapist world of the child (Disneyland) and the sacrifices of the adult world (the mother scalded by burning oil) are examples of image-driven techniques used to evoke the theme of race, the role of migrant women, and generational difference. Importantly, media contexts that shape the Australian society of the time (mass-market entertainment, the dominance of television) are not depicted as background action, but are worked into the narrative as lived images that directly impact on the senses. Research significance Published in two parts in Verity La., a creative arts journal funded by the Australia Council, the work radically reframes approaches to migrant narrative in formal and thematic terms. It also contributed to a successful 2018 Griffith Review QLD Writing Fellowship, in which the theme of capital was extended to migrant issues, and as such emerges from Macris’ award-winning project, the Capital novels (1997-2019). An extract of The Health Inspectors has been accepted for publication in the Greek journal Xartis (2020/21).	en_US
