Background Fashion Craft: drawn threads was aimed to highlight the creative potential of contemporary embroidery and the traditional techniques of the embroiderer. In a partnership with the Embroiderersâ¿¿ Guild of NSW, second year fashion and textile design students undertaking Couture Techniques students were taught the basic fundamentals of embroidery. Contribution The work allowed students to explore the basic techniques of embroidery, and then apply them to a design outcome, which encapsulated on of the three themes. The project enabled young â¿¿embroiderersâ¿¿ of the futureâ¿¿ to learn skills and knowledge through passing on techniques and applications suitable to high fashion design. Significance The significance of the work in Fashion Craft: drawn threads is that it demonstrates how designers can challenge tradition techniques and applications of embroidery, and apply them to contemporary outcomes. Furthermore, the work selected for the exhibition, is intended to demonstrate the potential of unique creative collaborations with local communities can extend the knowledge and skill base of our students understanding of high fashion through shared and traditional knowledge.
