The paper proposes a planar and low-profile antenna system as an alternative to dish-shaped reflector for receiving DBS services around the world. The antenna system is made of an array of resonant cavity antennas (RCAs) and a near-field phase transforming metasurface. The antenna has maximum height equivalent to one free space wavelength and thus can easily be concealed within buildings than hanging at outer walls. A proof-of-concept design example operating at 11 GHz is presented along with results predicted by numerical simulations. The antennahas a peak directivity of 22 dBi and the beam is pointing to an elevation angle of 20 o.
