Since 2018, the global #Metoo movement has inspired many Chinese women to post their stories and encouraged discussions about sexual harassment in China. This article considers how Chinese state, market and cultural forces interact to shape how Chinese media approach a transnational gender-related issue like the #Metoo campaign. More importantly, we ask about the extent to which transnational feminist movements reach places of smaller geographic scale in China. While summarizing the key findings from our research, this article also signals some methodological and analytic challenges in understanding the local dynamics that shape the relationship between media and feminism.
