This chapter presents a multispecies ethnography of human-shark relationships. It weaves together my own embodied experiences of ocean swimming with sharks and my pedagogical experiences in applied linguistics, and explores how sharks have been represented in news media, in science, and in the arts. The chapter considers the disproportionate fear of sharks encoded in the English language, and counters this with both rational academic analysis and my own autoethnographic and fan-fiction accounts. The analysis throughout is framed by critical feminist sensibilities and illustrates how human understandings of heroic masculinity and heterosexual gender relations are embedded in our stories and representations of sharks.
