dc.description.abstract	Community-based prevention is focused on locations where potential offenders, potential victims and associated third parties share their lives in close proximity. The approach is primarily concerned with building positive interactions against crime. The chapter identifies the theories of crime behind this approach, emphasising the role of poverty, inequality and the breakdown of community support mechanisms. A variety of strategies are then briefly described, before moving on to more detailed accounts of programs that illustrate the diversity of methods within this framework. The chapter concludes by discussing major issues around community-based prevention, in particular those of community economics and evidence of success.
