Due to their high biomass productivity, encouragement of less land use, contamination mitigation and ability to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, algae-based biomaterials are now increasingly utilized for many applications throughout the world. Presently, the long-term sustainability of algae production and application has not been much explored, yet it has practical uses and can improve technologies and management solutions. This chapter discusses the algal species and their applications in different scenarios and presents detailed strategies for biofuel generation and wastewater treatment. Afterwards, a holistic sustainability assessment framework is proposed which incorporates concerns from technical, environmental, economic and social perspectives. The key evaluation indices are illustrated, as is the use of possible evaluation tools such as life cycle analysis (LCA). The chapter provides information for the comprehensive evaluation of algae-based production and application in the sustainable circular bioeconomy.
