This video and sound piece has been designed to sit within the National Museum of Australia (NMA) permanent exhibition 'Great Southern Land' contributing to the museum education program as a provocation for conversation with communities and museum attendees. The piece was commissioned following the documenting of the Wurrundjeri led cultural burn in Victoria by Victor Steffensen Jacqueline Gothe Vera Hong and Craig Bender in 2016. This piece written and narrated by Victor Steffensen describes the importance of trees for the wellbeing of people and place through the voice of the trees and is screened in the Vision Theatre. In addition to the Wurrundjeri footage the imagery is gathered from the videography that Vera Hong, Craig Bender and Victor Steffensen have undertaken with Firesticks Alliance with Kuku Thaypan, Kuku Yalanjii, Yorta Yorta, Yuin, Gamilsroi Githabul and Wurrundjeri, The sound composition by Natalia Mann has been created through a collaborative process with Patty Preece and Merindi Schrieber working with the principle of of resonance in response to the images of trees producing a swirling sound scape and composition comprising voice instruments harp and forest sounds alongside the narration.
