Output and employment are the fundamental economic characteristics of an industry, and changes in these over time reveals the dynamics of an industry as it develops. How to identify the individual contributions of industries that participate in the production, management and maintenance of the built environment is discussed in the chapter. That is followed by a survey of previous research on how to use the available data to estimate the total economic contribution of those industries, which are collectively called the built environment sector (BES). The method developed in previous research is used to measure the size and extent of the built environment sector in Australia based on data provided in the Australian Bureau of Statistics annual publication Australian Industry (ABS 8155), which collects data for output and employment for sixteen relevant industries and sub-industries between 2007-08 and 2018-19. The chapter then discusses the effect of the increase in public building work done during the global financial crisis in 2009-10 on the BES industries and the Australian economy.
